How to Customise Your Coach

Go to Settings

Open the WattsUp app and navigate to Settings from the side menu

Tap on 'AI Coaching Style' to access coaching customisation options

Choose a Coach Personality

Select from preset personalities (The Motivator, The Analyst, The Supportive Friend, The Pro Coach) or choose Custom to fine-tune every setting

If you selected Custom, adjust individual settings like response length, detail level, challenge level, and data focus using sliders and pickers

The Supportive Friend

Warm and understanding, focuses on how you feel and encourages consistency. Great for riders prioritizing enjoyment and sustainability.

Create your own coaching personality by adjusting individual settings. Perfect for riders who know exactly what they want.

When you select Custom, you can fine-tune:

  • Coaching Style: Encouraging, Direct, or Balanced
  • Communication Tone: Friendly, Professional, or Adaptive
  • Response Length: Brief, Standard, or Comprehensive (slider)
  • Detail Level: Simple, Intermediate, or Advanced (slider)
  • Challenge Level: Supportive, Motivating, or Demanding
  • Data Focus: Feel-Based, Balanced, or Metrics-Driven

Custom Settings Explained

Response Length

Control how verbose your coach is:

  • Brief: Quick, actionable answers - get straight to the point
  • Standard: Balanced explanations with key details
  • Comprehensive: In-depth responses with full context

Detail Level

Set the technical depth of explanations:

  • Simple: Everyday language, minimal jargon
  • Intermediate: Some technical terms with explanation
  • Advanced: Full technical terminology (FTP, TSS, CTL, etc.)

Challenge Level

Adjust how hard your coach pushes you:

  • Supportive: Gentle encouragement, emphasizes rest and recovery
  • Motivating: Balanced push with encouragement (default for most)
  • Demanding: High expectations, pushes you harder

Data Focus

Choose what your coach emphasizes:

  • Feel-Based: Focus on RPE, how you feel, qualitative feedback
  • Balanced: Mix of data and subjective feel
  • Metrics-Driven: Heavy emphasis on numbers, watts, zones

Customisation Tips

  • Changes take effect immediately - your next chat message will use the new settings
  • Start with a preset personality and switch to Custom if you want to adjust specific settings
  • Try different styles for different phases of training (e.g., Supportive during recovery weeks)
  • The Coach Instructions preview shows exactly what instructions are sent to your AI coach
  • You can change your settings anytime - experiment to find what works best for you
